Ultimately any traffic that arrives at your site will come from either another web site or from somebody typing your url into their browser. On this page we will look at getting traffic from other websites, primarily from search engines.

Search Engines. If you can get a first page listing at Google, Yahoo or MSN for a search term related to your product or service then you will receive regular traffic.

The art of getting a website onto the first page of the search engines is called search engine optimisation (SEO) & there is a lot of conflicting information online regarding the best way to optimise.

SEO is pretty straightforward. All that is required is a web page that the search engine believes answers the question posed when the searcher enters a query into the search box. Below is an outline plan for optimising a site for search engines. It is simple but time consuming, it takes time but works.

• Determine the search terms that you want to be listed for. This should be a large list of all related terms.
• Build a single page for each search term. The page should contain useful content related to the search term & should be optimised, which basically means build the page the way search engines like them built. See the video set featured below for more information on search engine friendly pages.
• Obtain links to your pages from other sites.
• Help the search engines to find your site to catalogue it. This can take several weeks, however there are techniques for getting search engines to visit (spider) you immediately, we discuss these in our free Traffic Building Blueprint.

Other Web Sites. There are numerous ways to get traffic from other websites including exchanging links & writing articles for other sites to use. These strategies will bring some traffic but the biggest benefit to having another site link to yours is that search engines see your site as more important if more sites link to you.
